The Clique analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W9yW0hRZLQ&feature=related (embedded is disabled)

The Clique is a low-budget 'chick flick' film that wasn't released in cinemas instead direct-to-dvd based on a novel series by Lisi Harrison. American personality star Tyra Banks was the executive producer. The film really gave a fair chance to new actors and actress' as the lead role Massie Block was given to first job actress Elizabeth Mclaughlin. It also stars Bridget Mendler a disney channel actress that has featured as lead roles in 'Good Luck Charlie' and  'Wizards of Waverly Place' both Disney Channel Original Series.

The film starts with production company sequences that last for around 10 seconds and then the main titles come up. The genre is stated pretty much right away as the titles slide across a pink and yellow diamondy background and the title of the film "the clique" has a font that is like real diamonds, there is also a twinkle sound. The actual movie starts with cute twinkly girl music and an extreme long shot of a wealthy looking house. The camera tracks through the hall way of the house really fast and goes into the main character Massies bedroom where she is in her bed screaming at her parents and acting like a spoilt brat. The set-up of cameras is multiple camera.

The character is explained clearly in the first 2 minutes her dad is a successful business man and she is a "daddys girl" after the parents are firm with their daughter a small puppy resembling a pugg or chuiauau comes running into her room and sits up on the bed. Massie then talks to the puppy and says "this is almost as bad as when i lost my prada bag"

I think the first opening minutes achieve the genre, location and description of character and plot.

Definitely,Maybe analysis

Definitely,Maybe (released in UK cinemas 08/07/2008) is a romantic comedy feature film starring Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Breslin. Will Hayes (Reynolds) is questionned by his daughter (Breslin) after a sex-ed class. The film starts with a Universal Pictures Presents sequence shortly followed by Working Title Productions which is a British company known for making Romantic films (Notting hill, love actually) which could hint that the Genre is Romantic comedy. Another way to identify the genre is by identifying the actors, Ryan Reynolds has starred in big romantic-comedy films such as Just friends and more recently the proposal alongside Sandra Bullock. It also stars Isla Fisher the love interest is known for playing Mary-Jane (Shaggys love interest in scooby-doo) and has been in romantic comedys an example of this is Wedding Crashers. This could be a clue that this movie is a romantic comedy. The music ("Everyday people")  which is used sets the mood of the film and is appropriate and relative to the narrative at the start of the film.

The film starts with a voice-over from Will ,we also see an establishing shot as we are shown a daily routine of Will walking through a busy street in New york. After this long and medium shots are used to introduce the location and character. In the first 2 minutes we are shown the life of  the main character, we are told he works in an office, advertising. Will Hayes is portrayed as clumsy and humourous yet soft and loving towards his daughter. At the start of the film we are told Will is in the process of divorce.

ideas for film

I have been watching previous G321 final movies and i have had so many thoughts rushing around my head about what type of film i am going to be making for my final 2 minute opening clip. I have decided as the location will probably be best i am going to do a chick flick set in a high school. I have been watching clips on youtube of films set in high schools to give me more of an idea. Some examples of this are : John Tucker Must Die, Mean Girls, Clueless, Freaky Friday,Wild Child,The Clique, and A walk to remember.
I found that watching these clips, most of the movies are set similarly (storyline of first two minutes also camera movements) especially John Tucker Must Die and Mean Girls.  I also found that (even though irrelevent) the film posters are VERY similar

this suggests when planning for the film, costumes are crucial and show the personality of the character.
